L. Sempronius Pitio, 148 BC. Denarius (Subaeratus, 20 mm, 3.20 g, 12 h), a contemporary plated imitation. Irregular mint. PITIO Head of Roma to right, wearing winged helmet and pearl necklace; to right, X (mark of value). Rev. L•SEMP / ROMA (in linear frame) The Dioscuri, each holding spear, on horseback galloping right; above their heads, two stars. Cf. Babelon (Sempronia) 2, Crawford 216/1, RBW 926 and Sydenham 402 (for prototype). Attractively toned. Brushed and with minor breaks in plating, otherwise, very fine.
